State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian of LA County introduced a bill in Sacramento last week to fund the California Arts Council at the level of $75M – or just under $2 per person. Funding at this level would move California from 49th place in per capita investment in the arts to about 12th place.
The bill, AB 580, will now begin the process of committee review. California Arts Advocates and Californians for the Arts are asking arts organizations to help advance the bill by sending formal letters of support to Assemblymember Nazarian’s office. At this early stage of the legislative process, letters of support play a critical role in signaling to the author, the committees, and even the Governor that a bill has strong statewide support.
We visited Sacramento in February and heard from San Diego’s representatives that they believe in the importance of restoring arts funding to a level appropriate to California’s national and international leadership position in arts, culture, and creativity. Please add your voice to those of other arts supporters across the state by submitting a letter of support for AB 580 right away.
